Framing Tips

Your print/canvas is printed with the most advanced techniques in modern printing, including archival inks and acid free papers. That being stated, any print will fade over time if exposed to even small amounts of ultra-violet light and/or fluorescent light. To preserve your investment, always frame your print using archival framing methods (acid free mats, hinges and backing board). It is also wise to consider using UV filtering glass.

Your print will come shipped in a crush-proof mailing tube. We recommend that you have your print removed from the tube by a professional framer. Improper handling of your print may cause damage. If you do not plan on having your print framed for an extended period of time we recommend having your print taken out of the tube and stored flat between acid free foam core or in a print file.

Art Terminology

Original Artwork
There is only one original. Every print and canvas copy is reproduced from the original piece of art, either by offset or giclee printing.

Terrence Fogarty's original paintings are painted in the traditional oil on canvas method. Each painting is completed with a pencil, paint brush, oil paint and a blank canvas, nothing more.

The collector should know that these are paintings and not photos that have been touched up or colorized. No airbrush or computer graphics are used to create any part of the original art. Certain paintings can take up to three months or more to complete.

Much of the time spent working on a painting is spent researching the subject, whether it is going through dusty archives or doing field work with a camera. The artist spends countless hours shooting hundreds of photos of his subjects and potential subjects for reference in his paintings, whether it happens to be an old barn or kids playing pond hockey.

Many original paintings are sold before they are completed, but some do remain for sale to collectors. If you have an interest in purchasing an original piece of art, please call the studio for more information.

Giclée (pronounced ZEE CLAY)
Giclée printing or digital printing is a more costly, labor intensive process but it brings richer color and a more 3D quality to the images. Giclée is a french word meaning “sprayed ink.” Giclée printing can be applied to both paper and canvas print editions. Canvas giclée reproductions are generally printed to the exact size of the original painting and are as close in appearance to the original painting as possible.

Artist Proof
With most modern offset print editions, the existence of artist proofs is simply bowing to the tradition of stone lithography. The artist reserves and numbers a separate group of prints for his or her own use with each edition that is printed. Typically, the percentage is 10-20% of an edition. These prints may or may not be for sale to the public. Because of the small number of prints and the cachet of being from the artist’s own personal stock, they generally sell for a higher price. Artist proofs are distinguished by the abbreviation AP located next to the number of the print and sometimes by a separate logo or printed remarque on the print.

Hors d’Commerce
Another french term meaning “not for commerce” applies to a group of prints used strictly for promotion or samples. These prints are numbered and signed by the artist and can number as few as 1 or 2 prints, or as many as 50. Prints are designated by the abbreviation HC.

Printer’s Proof
A small number of prints (usually less than 10) issued for the printer as a gesture of appreciation by the artist and used for reference by the printer. Prints are designated by the abbreviation PP.
