Depicting over 50 high school hockey programs, "Sons of March" celebrates state hockey champions, sentimental runner-ups and a few emerging powers of "the tourney".

The "Sons of March" carry on the dreams of their fathers and grandfathers by gathering on a traditional outdoor rink backed by a brilliant sky that seems to stretch from the great northwoods to the site of the tourney in St. Paul.

The painting "Sons of March" will mark the 10th year that Terrence Fogarty has created artwork for the boys tournament and will be duly noted on each print with a colorful montage of the past nine years of tournament artwork.

The paintings Rise and Shine and Mainstreet, featured on the program covers of the 2006 Boys' and Girls' State Hockey Tournaments, have an unmistakable Iron Range flavor.

Rise and Shine features the wintery backdrop of the storied Eveleth (Minnesota) Hippodrome.

Mainstreet is based on a view of downtown Eveleth but with some artistic adjustments to the storefronts on the left side of the painting. Patrons of Bill St. Mane's Sporting Goods in South Minneapolis will notice a striking similarity to the storefront in Mainstreet.

Many thanks to the Charchenko family of Victoria for their help with both of these depictions of Minnesota's hockey heritage.

The best goals for a boot hockey game were rock-solid chunks of grey snow that fell from the wheels of cars and trucks. They were always accessible and contrasted nicely against a fresh snowfall.

The games were usually chaos. The teams were decided by whoever happened to be outside after school and the action was occasionally stopped for the oncoming cars or the rogue dog who wanted to swipe the ball. The end of the game was determined by the sunset and in mid-winter that tended to coincide perfectly with dinner time.

I'd like to especially thank several families from the Orono area for their help in the creation of "Boot", the 2005 Girls State Tournament program cover. Kristin and Jim Johnson, Kurt and Jenny Keller, Pete and Sue Makarov, Lee and Katie Martini and all their young models.

This piece appears on the cover of the 2005 State Boys Hockey Tournament program It is the eighth consecutive year that I've had the opportunity to work with the MSHSL.

Unlike my painting "The Legacy" which appeared on the cover several years ago, this still-life of hockey (and non-hockey) keepsakes is the collection of a much younger sports fan. This young collector seems to value his prized marbles and tin hockey player as much as Moose Goheen's 1925 membership card from the US Amateur Hockey Association.

Thank you to Roger Godin at the Minnesota Wild for sharing his knowledge of the old St. Paul Athletic Club hockey teams during the completion of "Hockey City Collection".

The original painting and limited edition print "Herbie", commemorating the life of legendary hockey coach Herb Brooks, was unveiled on October 20th, 2004 at Jax Café in Minneapolis.

Many of Herb's family members and friends attend the event including his widow Patti, son Dan, daughter Kelly, brother Dave and their families.

The evening was spearheaded by hockey legend Lou Nanne. Our thanks to Lou and the numerous sponsors of the benefit for choosing Terrence Fogarty to create this rememberance of Herb.

Special thanks to Julie Grebin of the University of Minnesota for her countless hours of work to make this project successful. We would also like to specially thank Mike Haloran of the U of M, Bill Mansun and Tom Vanelli of 3M Championship and Bill Kozlak of Jax Café. Because of their efforts a check for $200,000 dollars was presented to Gopher Athletic Director Joel Maturi on behalf of the of the Brooks Scholarship at the U of M.

This painting was commissioned by the Minnesota Wild to celebrate the 2004 NHL All-Star game in St. Paul. Every NHL Team is included in this piece and yet I think its main appeal is the old fashioned playground atmosphere that the painting evokes.

THE 2003 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP PRINT

"Back to Back" offered a unique opportunity to tie together the 2003 hockey championship piece and the 2002 print "It's Our Time." "Back to Back" was also issued as a time-determined edition.

"Tribute" was the cover for the 1999 State Hockey Tourney program. It offered a bit of comfort and nostalgia for those hard core St. Paulites who saw the Tournament move to Minneapolis' Target Center during the construction of the new XCEL Center.

I spent a lot of hours at the State High School League office going over old Tourney programs and looking for the right teams that have appeared most often at the Tourney since it's inception.

My "all-tournament team" is set in the old St. Paul Civic Center Arena with its clear dasher boards. The clear boards were one of the most memorable aspects of the old Civic Center. The other memory for me were those Fighting Saints versus Houston Aeros boxing match-ups in the old WHA.

Fans of the old South St. Paul Steers Jr. A hockey team might be interested to know that I used players from that club for models in this painting.

Tradition Poster  Click Here    $ 40.00

This is the painting that started the continuous run of pieces on the cover of the Minnesota High School Hockey tournament programs. Oddly, it was not done with any intension of appearing on a program cover. Jim Martin at Gopher State Litho and Howard Voigt at the High School League all figured in that idea.

The gathering of hockey memorabilia started long before the painting began. Many sources were utilized, including longtime collector Lou Nanne. (That's Lou's helmet and Gopher letter sweater in the piece). The Hockey Hall of Fame in Eveleth was also a major contributor to the memorabilia appearing in "Tradition" which was painted in the summer of 1997. I set up the entire scene in a barn loft as it was the closest thing I could find resembling an old attic. The painting was sold to a collector on the East Coast (a Minnesota transplant) almost before it was dry.

A subtle ghost-like portrait of Bill Goldsworthy is visible at the top center of the painting. The publisher arranged to have all 750 prints autographed by "Goldy".

Sadly, Goldy was only able to autograph approximately 200 of the prints before he died in 1996.

This was the first panoramic sports venue I painted. When I finished this piece back in 1989, I had no idea that the print would spawn a series of prints on U of M sports stadiums and arenas. These prints have proven to be very collectible over the years and occasionally sell for thousands of dollars on the secondary market. Most people who own them however, will never sell them.

I shot my photo reference for this piece at several games and got chewed out by the ushers as I stood on ledges and seats looking for a proper view. I made sure to include several important aspects of the old arena including Goldy on his perch, a tribute to the "NE" section and of course a visage of the late John Mariucci himself in the crowd.

Mariucci Arena was hockey's version of Fenway Park with all of those quirky angles and other oddities. It was great subject matter for a painting and I was happy to bring my own personal view of the old place to canvas. This was probably one of the first panoramic paintings of any Minnesota sports scene ever produced in a limited edition print format.

The Minnesota High School Hockey Tournament was returning to its rightful place in St. Paul for 2001 after a two year stint on the West side of the river. This was one of those odd circumstances where I actually had the title for the piece before I painted it.

I spent much of New Year's Day 2001 driving around the East side of St. Paul looking for a background. The background you see in "Coming Home" is actually a combination of views from Mounds Park and Dayton's Bluff. I was then fortunate en enough to have three great models to work with. My thanks to the Wright family of Wyoming, Minnesota. The kids even brought a tear to Nick Coleman's eye.

"Dedication" appeared on the cover of the 2002 Boys State hockey tournament program. This was the first tournament to take place after the attacks on 9/11/01 and inspired "Dedication" and another piece called "Home of the Brave" which appeared on the 2002 Girls program cover.

This is one my favorite pieces. The title refers to a young man's dedication to the game of hockey, but also reflects a dedication to family and country as well.

I used many personal effects in this painting and modeled the warming house after the display the US Hockey Hall of Fame in Eveleth, Minnesota.
