"Mustang Memories" celebrates 35 years of athletics at Southwest Minnesota State University. Commissioned specifically for the Marshall, Minnesota school, this painting has been reproduced as 509 limited edition prints and 20 canvas reproductions.

A special note about this project is that SMSU is the alma mater of artist Terrence Fogarty (Class of '82). At a recent fundraising gala benefiting SMSU, Schwans Food Co. purchased the original oil painting for $20,000 during a live auction.

The painting is a tribute to the University’s #1 booster and features a who’s who of Minnesota sports icons. Bud Grant, Dave Winfield, Paul Giel, Lou Nanne, Tony Oliva, Bernie Bierman, Lou Holtz and Kevin McHale are all captured in dramatic fashion. Also featured are classic Minnesota sports venues such as Memorial Stadium and Met Stadium.

Artist Proofs were created for the August 7th 2005 Sid Hartman fundraiser in Minneapolis. The gala was attended by dozens of sports celebrities including George Steinbrenner, Lou Holtz, Bobby Knight and Bud Grant.

This tribute to the Ohio State Football tradition celebrates everything that makes a Saturday afternoon at Ohio Stadium aka "The Horseshoe" a memorable experience. In doing this piece, I learned just how important and renowned the OSU band is to the Buckeye fans. " The Best Damn Band in the Land" has earned a prominent place in this painting. The shadow cast on the grandstand in the left side of the painting seems to form the Ohio State "Block O". How did the architects plan that one?

I painted "Friday Lights" to capture the essence of high school football in a small town. In this case, I was inspired by the football field in Randolph, Minnesota. I made numerous trips to this southeast Minnesota town over the course of several years looking for the right lighting and atmosphere. What I came up with was homecoming "Randolph Rockets" style under a brilliant autumn sunset.

The schools in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference submitted several of their old football keepsakes for the props in this painting. Some schools had kept quite a bit of old memorabilia and some schools had very little. Gustavus Adolphus, Hamline University and surprisingly, Macalester, contributed the most unique items for this piece.

The oldest item may have been the small Macalester megaphone.

The small black and white drawing that appears on the Artist Proofs for this edition was a sketch I did of the wall relief on the St. Thomas Football stadium.

As an artist you have to appreciate this setting. The St. Thomas - St. Johns College football rivalry is a tradition.

Most of my reference for this piece was taken from a game in 1993 or 1994. An unusual warm snap in late October brought out a larger than normal crowd for their annual game at St. John's home field.

Notice the crowd in the foreground and how very few people are actually watching the game. The game itself seems secondary to the social scene, but when it's 80 degrees in October, who cares.

This piece was done in the early 90's as part of a trilogy of U of M sports venues; Williams Arena and the old Mariucci Arena being the other two. Some of the best memories for me as a kid were going to the games at Memorial with my dad. Like many people, I was disappointed not to have that experience for the last twenty-five years. Tearing this place down was regrettable.
