I photographed much of the reference for "Road Trip" along the back roads of southeastern Minnesota. The look of this painting suggests it may be a scene from the past when barn advertisements were still a common sight around the country and kids still played informal, sandlot baseball games in their spare time. The A.J. Reach ball was a popular baseball as far back as the early 1900's. "Road Trip" is featured on the 2003 yearbook cover for the St. Paul Saints Minor League Baseball Club.

I've had the pleasure of doing a number of special pieces of artwork for the Minnesota Twins over the years including 1997 artwork for the rightfield "baggie" at the Metrodome, Dave Winfield's 3000th hit in 1993 and numerous pieces for Twins Hall of Fame inductees. In 2001 the club celebrated 40 years as a franchise by commissioning this painting. The edition size of the print was only 100, so it has proven to be a very sought after piece. Never having been to this southside landmark in Chicago, my father and I drove down for a weekend series in 1988. It was Father's Day on that Sunday afternoon and the weather was spectacular. This might have been one of my favorite parks and paintings. I can still smell the Italian sausages when I look at this one. This two-panel piece was sold to a collector in Michigan. I should have titled this piece, "Baseball in Butte" because I always get asked where this park is. The Butte Copper Kings were a class A baseball team that played in the historic mining town of Butte, Montana. This was the best seat not at the ballpark. From this hill high above the 3rd baseline you could watch both the game and the brilliant sunset over the rocky mountains. This is one of three paintings that I did that were inspired by the tiny ballfield in Miesville, Minnesota. This park had a "Field of Dreams" quality to it, right down to the corn growing beyond the outfield fences.
